Novated lease calculator

On a $100,000 salary, a $60,000 car on a 5-year novated lease takes about $413 a fortnight out of your take-home pay if it is an FBT-exempt electric car and $589 if it is petrol, running costs included. A car loan at the same 9.5% rate takes about $652. Over the term the lease is $31,067 lower than the loan for the electric car and $8,158 lower for petrol, before HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge and any lost employer super. A Bill before Parliament would replace the exemption with a discount for new commitments from 1 April 2027; it is not yet law, and on its 25% tier the same car is $13,885 lower. This is an independent calculator: we do not sell leases, collect quotes or see what you enter.

Super guarantee is 12% of qualifying earnings, and salary sacrificed to a novated lease is not qualifying earnings, so your employer can pay less unless your contract says otherwise. HELP and the surcharge are compared with having no lease, on a repayment income of $106,848. Extra HELP repayments reduce your debt.

Purpose and limits. This compares the after-tax cost of a novated lease with a car loan on the same car, using your inputs and 2026-27 tax rates held for the whole period. It is an estimate, not a quote. It covers employees of employers that pay FBT, not FBT-exempt or rebatable employers such as hospitals and charities. A lease rate one percentage point higher makes the lease total $71,880. With no electric car concession the lease total is $93,486 using post-tax contributions (no FBT), or $110,467 if the FBT stays in the package. Your employer can pay $9,476 less super over the lease, which is not in the totals, and neither is what that super would have earned. Reportable fringe benefits of $22,642 a year move HELP repayments up $1,027 a year and the Medicare levy surcharge up $1,068 a year if they apply to you. The surcharge uses the single thresholds, not family ones. In today's dollars the lease total is $64,813, the loan total $93,679 and the difference $28,866, spread over 5 years. If you leave your job or stop being paid, the lease stops being novated and the payments can fall on you from after-tax money. It leaves out other income tests such as family payments and Division 293 tax; the maximum super contribution base; early exit costs; stamp duty and registration on delivery; the one-third drop in base value after 4 full FBT years; the operating cost method; and the car's resale value, because you own it under both options at the end.

Modelling conventions you cannot change here. Payments are level and fall due at the end of each pay; a resident with the tax-free threshold and this salary as the only income; no deposit on the lease, because the ATO does not let a cash contribution reduce the lease payments or residual; the car available for private use all year; 2026-27 tax, HELP, surcharge, super guarantee and FBT rates in every year; interest rates fixed for the term; and in today's dollars, each year's costs counted at the end of that year, with deposit and fees counted now.

Present value. Lease residual payout: $14,918 is the present value of $16,878 in 5 years, at 2.5% inflation a year. Car loan balloon: $14,918 is the present value of $16,878 in 5 years, at 2.5% inflation a year.

Assumptions. $100,000 salary paid fortnightly; $60,000 car; lease over 5 years at 9.5%; car loan over 5 years at 9.5%, with $0 deposit, $0 fees and a $16,878 balloon; $3,600 of running costs with GST and $900 without GST in the first year, growing 0% a year; $300 of lease fees a year; a residual of 28.13% of the amount financed, paid after tax at the end with 10% GST added; your employer claims GST credits and passes them on and pays super on salary after the sacrifice; FBT removed by post-tax contributions; no HELP debt; with private hospital cover; 2.5% inflation for today's dollars. Change the figures above.

Why the default settings are reasonable. Income tax, the Medicare levy, the HELP and surcharge scales, the 12% super guarantee, the 47% FBT rate, the 2.0802 gross-up, the 20% statutory formula, the $69,883 car limit and the luxury car tax thresholds are the amounts set for 2026-27. The 9.5% lease and car loan rates are the RBA's average rates on new personal finance leases and new personal fixed-term loans for August 2026 (table F8), which were both 9.50%. A car loan quote for a new car may be lower and a lease quote may differ. The residual defaults to the ATO minimum for the term, in ATO ID 2002/1004. Keeping the loan balloon equal to the residual, with the same term and no deposit or loan fees, leaves both options with the same lump sum on the same date, so the per-pay figures compare like with like. A 5-year term is the longest in the ATO table, and Treasury's Electric Car Discount review says novated leases are typically 3 to 5 years. The electric car and a binding date before 1 April 2027 are the case a lease signed today falls under for a car that qualifies; switch the car type or date for other cases. Super is shown on the legal minimum, because the ATO says salary sacrificed to a novated lease is not qualifying earnings. Employer GST credits are on because an employer registered for GST can claim them and the ATO's higher gross-up rate exists for that case; we have no data on how many pass them on, and switching this off adds $5,064 to the default lease total. GST on the residual is on because provider quotes show it added at payout; we could not confirm that from an ATO source. Post-tax contributions are on because they remove FBT under the statutory formula; that the method is widely used comes from provider and comparison sites. Running costs are held flat so that a forecast does not move the comparison, and 2.5% inflation is the mid-point of the RBA target range of 2 to 3%. The salary, fortnightly pay, car price, running costs and $300 of lease fees are illustrative, not sourced figures, so enter your own from your quote.

How a novated lease works

A novated lease is a car lease between you and a finance company that your employer agrees to take on while you work there. The ATO treats it as a car your employer provides, so it is a fringe benefit. Your employer pays the lease and the bundled running costs from your pay under a salary sacrifice arrangement, which lowers your taxable income and the tax taken from each pay.

Two things separate it from a car loan. The payments are partly or fully pre-tax, and GST is treated differently: the finance company can claim a GST credit on the car, so you finance less than the sticker price, and GST credits on running costs can be passed to you. Against that, FBT may apply, and you owe a residual at the end.

A novated lease depends on your job. If you leave, or go on unpaid leave, the ATO's examples show the novation ending and the payments falling back on you. Not every employer offers novated leases. For the wider rules on packaging pay, see the salary packaging calculator and the salary sacrifice calculator.

Worked example

A $100,000 salary, a $60,000 car, 5 years, 9.5% on both the lease and the loan, $4,500 of running costs and $300 of lease fees a year. The loan has a balloon equal to the lease residual, so both end with the same lump sum.

Car loan$0$652$0$652$101,644

FBT makes the gap between these rows. With post-tax contributions the petrol car pays no FBT, but $12,000 a year of the package moves to after-tax pay. Left in the package, the FBT of $11,732 a year takes the lease above the loan. Every total includes the $16,878 residual payout, and you own the car at the end of each. These figures are before HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge and any lost employer super. The rate on a real quote changes these results, so check yours: the calculator shows what one percentage point on the lease rate does to the total.

FBT and the employee contribution method

FBT on a car is usually worked out with the statutory formula: 20% of the car's base value, whatever the kilometres. That is why this calculator does not ask how far you drive. Base value is the cost price including GST and any luxury car tax, without registration or stamp duty. For the FBT year to 31 March 2027 the taxable value is grossed up at 2.0802 and taxed at 47%.

On a $60,000 car that is a $12,000 taxable value and $11,732 of FBT a year if nothing else is done. Under the employee contribution method you pay $12,000 a year from after-tax pay, which takes the taxable value to nil. Your employer owes GST of 1/11 on that contribution, which is why the pre-tax part of the package does not fall by the full amount. Try both settings under "How FBT is covered" in the calculator.

The electric car rule, and the change before Parliament

Under section 8A of the FBT Act, a car is exempt if it is a battery or hydrogen fuel cell electric car, first held and used from 1 July 2022, used by a current employee, and luxury car tax has never been payable on it. For 2026-27 the fuel-efficient threshold is $91,661 and the threshold for other cars is $80,809. Plug-in hybrids lost eligibility from 1 April 2025, apart from those already covered by a binding commitment made before that date.

The statutory review of the Electric Car Discount reported on 5 May 2026. Schedule 5 of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 4) Bill 2026 would replace the exemption with a discount. The Bill passed the House of Representatives on 29 October 2026 and is not yet law, so the rows marked Bill are proposals.

FBT treatment of electric cars by commitment date

From 1 April 2029Up to the fuel-efficient limit25% discount, 15% formula (Bill)
AnyAbove the fuel-efficient limitFull FBT, 20% formula

A commitment is the point at which the deal is binding and cannot be backed out of, not the delivery date. Under the Bill, a car keeps its treatment until that commitment ends. The Explanatory Memorandum says refinancing, changing the term or residual, adding accessories that raise the payments, and changing employers all count as a new commitment. The ATO's plug-in hybrid guidance also treats a break in the novation, such as unpaid leave that ends it, as a new commitment. The Explanatory Memorandum does not list that case, so applying it to electric cars is our inference from the plug-in hybrid example, not a stated rule. The fuel-efficient limit in a future year will be whatever is set for that year; the calculator uses the 2026-27 figure.

Reportable fringe benefits

An exempt electric car is still reported on your income statement. On the statutory formula, the reportable amount is worked out as if the 20% formula applied, then grossed up at 1.8868; under the operating cost method it would differ. On a $60,000 car with no post-tax contribution that is $22,642 a year. It is not taxed, but it counts towards HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, Division 293 tax and family payments.

In the example, taxable income falls to $84,206, but repayment income is $106,848. With a HELP debt, repayments rise $1,027 a year, which takes the fortnightly cost from $413 to $453, although those repayments do reduce the debt. Without hospital cover, that income is above the $105,000 single threshold, adding $1,068 a year of Medicare levy surcharge. The calculator can count both. The Bill would keep the 20% basis for reporting, even where the 15% formula applies to the FBT.

Employer super

The super guarantee is 12% of qualifying earnings. The ATO's example shows salary sacrificed to a novated lease coming out of qualifying earnings, unlike salary sacrificed into super. On the example's $15,794 sacrifice that is $1,895 a year of super at risk, and $9,476 over 5 years; on the petrol car with post-tax contributions it is $586 a year. Your employer can agree to pay super on your salary before the sacrifice, and an award or agreement may require it. Check your contract, and use the setting in the calculator.

GST and the car limit

The GST credit on a car is capped at one-eleventh of the car limit. For 2026-27 the car limit is $69,883, so the most that can be claimed is $6,353. A $60,000 car has a credit of $5,455, leaving $54,545 to finance. The cap only matters on a dearer car. You can use the GST calculator to split any price.

The residual, or balloon

A novated lease leaves a lump sum at the end. It should reflect the car's likely market value, and it cannot be lower than the ATO's minimum for the term unless a fair estimate of that value supports a lower figure. A higher residual lowers each payment and raises the amount due at the end.

ATO minimum residual values by lease term
Lease termMinimum residualOn $54,545, before GST
1 year65.63%$35,798
2 years56.25%$30,682
3 years46.88%$25,571
4 years37.5%$20,455
5 years28.13%$15,344

You can pay the residual, sell the car or re-lease it, but the lease cannot include an agreement that you will buy the car. Lease providers usually quote the residual before GST and add GST on payout. We could not confirm that from an ATO source, so it is a setting in the calculator. A residual is paid from after-tax money.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a novated lease?
A three-way agreement between you, your employer and a finance company. You lease a car, and your employer agrees to make the lease payments from your pay for as long as you work there. Payments come from your salary before tax, and the running costs can be bundled in. The car is treated as a fringe benefit your employer provides.
Is a novated lease cheaper than a car loan?
It depends on your tax rate, the car and the rates and fees in your quote. On this page's example, a $60,000 electric car on a $100,000 salary comes to $70,577 over 5 years on a lease and $101,644 on a loan, at the same 9.5% rate, before HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge and any lost super. A petrol car at the same price comes to $93,486 with post-tax contributions that remove the FBT, and $110,467 if the FBT stays in the package, which is $8,823 above the loan. Enter your own quote in the calculator to see the difference for you.
Are electric cars still FBT free on a novated lease?
Yes under current law, for battery and hydrogen electric cars where luxury car tax has never been payable. Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 4) Bill 2026 would change this for commitments made from 1 April 2027. It passed the House of Representatives on 29 October 2026 and was not law when this page was updated.
Are plug-in hybrids exempt from FBT?
Not any more. Plug-in hybrids stopped being eligible from 1 April 2025. One already in use and exempt before that date stays exempt while the same binding commitment continues. Changes such as a new employer or altered lease payments end the exemption.
What is the employee contribution method?
A way to remove FBT on a car. You pay part of the lease from after-tax pay, and each dollar reduces the car's taxable value. For a car on the 20% statutory formula, post-tax contributions of 20% of the base value a year bring the taxable value to nil. Your employer pays no FBT, and the rest of the package stays pre-tax.
Does a novated lease affect my HELP repayments?
It can. A reportable fringe benefit is not taxed, but it is added to your income for HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, family payments and other tests. An FBT-exempt electric car is still reportable: in this page's example the amount is $22,642 a year, which raises HELP repayments by $1,027 a year. With post-tax contributions on a petrol car nothing is reportable, and the lower taxable income brings HELP repayments down by $733 a year.
Does a novated lease reduce my employer super?
It can. The super guarantee is 12% of qualifying earnings, and the ATO says salary sacrificed to a novated lease is not qualifying earnings. On a $15,794 sacrifice your employer could pay $1,895 a year less, or $9,476 over 5 years. Your contract, award or agreement may require super on your salary before the sacrifice, so ask your employer. Post-tax contributions stay in your qualifying earnings.
What happens at the end of a novated lease?
The residual falls due. The usual choices are to pay it out and keep the car, sell or trade in the car, or re-lease it. The lease itself cannot contain an agreement that you will buy the car. The ATO minimum residual for a 5-year lease is 28.13% of cost.
What if I change jobs during a novated lease?
The novation ends when you leave, and your employer stops making the payments. You can keep paying the finance company yourself from after-tax money, or a new employer may agree to take on the lease. Under the Bill, a new employer is a new commitment for an electric car, so the rules at that date would apply.
