How income tax, withholding and your return fit together

Income tax is worked out on your taxable income for the whole financial year. Your employer withholds an estimate from each pay, and your tax return settles the difference as a refund or a bill.

The tax brackets page shows the rates and your marginal rate. The tax withheld calculator gives the PAYG amount for one pay, and the tax return calculator estimates your refund or bill. The tax-free threshold page covers which job to claim it on.

Other items change the final figure. The Medicare levy calculator and the low income tax offset page cover a levy and an offset, and the HECS-HELP repayment calculator covers student debt. GST and FBT are separate taxes, with the GST calculator for prices and the FBT calculator for benefits employers provide. The novated lease calculator applies FBT to a car paid for from your pay.
