Aussie Pay Calc

How our calculators work

The rates, thresholds and assumptions behind the pay calculator and the salary after tax pages, for the 2026-27 financial year.

What the pay calculator works out

It turns your pay into an annual figure, then works out the tax for the year in this order:

  1. Super. If your pay includes super, it is split out first at the 12% super guarantee rate. Otherwise super is shown on top of your pay.
  2. Income tax on your taxable income, using the resident, non-resident or working holiday rates.
  3. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO), for residents claiming the tax-free threshold.
  4. The Medicare levy, plus the Medicare levy surcharge if you say you have no private hospital cover.
  5. Compulsory HELP repayments, if you say you have a HELP debt.

Take-home pay is taxable income minus those amounts. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly figures divide the annual result by 52, 26 and 12.

Rates used for 2026-27

The full rate tables, including foreign resident and working holiday rates, are on the tax brackets page.

Taxable income (resident)Rate
$0 to $18,200Nil
$18,201 to $45,00015%
$45,001 to $135,00030%
$135,001 to $190,00037%
$190,001 and over45%
  • Medicare levy: 2% of taxable income. No levy is paid below $28,011, and up to $35,013 it phases in at 10c per dollar over the lower threshold. The ATO has not yet published the 2026-27 low-income thresholds, so these are the latest published (2025-26) figures.
  • Medicare levy surcharge (singles, no private hospital cover): 1% from $105,001, 1.25% from $123,001, 1.5% from $164,001.
  • LITO: up to $700 for taxable income up to $37,500, reducing to nil at $66,667.
  • HELP: no repayment up to $69,528 of repayment income. Above that, 15c per dollar, rising to 17c above $129,717, and 10% of total repayment income from $186,051.
  • Super guarantee: 12% of ordinary time earnings.

These figures come from ATO and Treasury publications. They are checked each 1 July, and again whenever the ATO announces a change.

What the results leave out

  • Your employer's PAYG withholding, in the pay calculator. Employers use the ATO withholding formulas, which round each pay period, so your payslip can differ by a few dollars from our figures. The tax withheld calculator applies those formulas (ATO Schedules 1 and 8) and matches the ATO's published sample data.
  • Deductions, other income, and offsets other than LITO, such as the seniors and pensioners tax offset.
  • Family thresholds for the Medicare levy and the surcharge. The calculator uses the singles thresholds.
  • Salary packaging, fringe benefits and reportable super, except in calculators that ask for them.
