What is GST in Australia?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a broad-based 10% tax on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. It was introduced on 1 July 2000.
How do I calculate GST?
To add GST, multiply the price by 1.1. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, divide by 1.1. For example, $100 + GST = $110. $110 including GST = $100 ex GST + $10 GST.
Who needs to register for GST?
Businesses with annual turnover of $75,000 or more must register for GST. Non-profit organisations have a higher threshold of $150,000. You can voluntarily register even if you earn less.
What items are GST-free?
Some items are GST-free including basic food (fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, milk), health services, education, childcare and some exported goods and services.
