Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I salary package?
With a public benevolent institution or health promotion charity, up to about $15,900 a year of everyday expenses. With a public or not-for-profit hospital or public ambulance service, up to about $9,010. Both can also package about $2,650 of meal entertainment.
Why are the limits $15,900 and $9,010?
The ATO caps are grossed-up amounts: $30,000 and $17,000. Dividing by the Type 2 gross-up rate of 1.8868 gives the cash amount you can package without your employer paying fringe benefits tax.
Is salary packaging the same as salary sacrifice?
Salary sacrifice usually means putting pre-tax pay into super, which any employee can do. Salary packaging here means paying everyday expenses from pre-tax pay, which is tax free only with FBT-exempt employers such as charities and public hospitals.
Can I salary package with any charity or not-for-profit?
Not to the same extent. The limits on this page apply to public benevolent institutions, health promotion charities, public and not-for-profit hospitals and public ambulance services. Other charities and not-for-profits are rebatable employers: they get a partial FBT rebate, so packaging is usually worth less, and this calculator does not model it.
Does salary packaging affect HELP repayments or Centrelink?
It can. Your packaged amount appears as reportable fringe benefits on your income statement. It is not taxed, but it is counted in income tests for HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge and family payments.
