Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible for Paid Parental Leave in Australia?
To be eligible for Paid Parental Leave, you must be the primary carer of a newborn or recently adopted child, meet the work test (having worked at least 330 hours in 10 of the 13 months before the birth or adoption), and meet the income test (individual income of $168,865 or less per year for 2024-25). You must also be an Australian resident and not be working during the leave period.
How much is Paid Parental Leave in Australia?
The government Paid Parental Leave payment is based on the national minimum wage rate. As of July 2024, this is approximately $882.75 per week (before tax). The payment is taxable income and is paid fortnightly by Services Australia. Your employer may also offer additional paid parental leave on top of the government entitlement.
Can Paid Parental Leave be shared between parents?
Yes, eligible couples can share up to 20 weeks of Paid Parental Leave between them, with an additional 2 weeks reserved on a "use it or lose it" basis for each parent. This means if both parents are eligible, families can access up to 22 weeks total. The leave can be taken at the same time or at different times within 24 months of the child's birth or adoption.
How does employer parental leave work with government payments?
Employer-funded parental leave is separate from the government Paid Parental Leave scheme. You can receive both entitlements. Some employers offer full pay during parental leave, while others may offer a reduced rate or no paid leave at all. Employer leave can typically be taken before, after, or concurrently with government Paid Parental Leave, depending on your employer's policy.
