The tax estimate assumes the payout is added to a full year of your salary in 2026-27, after a normal resignation. Payouts on genuine redundancy or retirement are taxed differently.

How annual leave is worked out

  • Each year of service earns 4 weeks of your ordinary weekly hours: 152 hours on a 38-hour week, 80 hours on a 20-hour week.
  • Leave builds up progressively from your first day and carries over from year to year.
  • Your balance is what you have earned minus what you have taken.
  • When it is taken or paid out, it is paid at your base rate, plus leave loading where your award or agreement includes it.

Sick and carer's leave is a separate balance: see the sick leave calculator. The National Employment Standards set these minimums. Your award, agreement or contract can give you more, but not less. To work out loading on its own, use the leave loading calculator.

Annual leave when you leave a job

Unused annual leave is paid out when your job ends. After a normal resignation it is taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, which the calculator estimates by adding the payout to a full year's salary. On a genuine redundancy, see the redundancy calculator, where unused leave is taxed at no more than 32%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much annual leave do I get in Australia?
Full-time and part-time employees get 4 weeks of paid annual leave a year, based on their ordinary hours. Some shift workers get 5 weeks. Casual employees do not get paid annual leave; they get a casual loading instead.
How does annual leave build up?
It accumulates progressively through the year from your first day, based on your ordinary hours. For a 38-hour week that is 152 hours a year, or about 2.92 hours for each week worked.
Is unused annual leave paid out when I leave?
Yes. Any unused annual leave is paid out when your employment ends, at the rate you would have been paid had you taken it, including leave loading if your award or agreement provides it.
How is an annual leave payout taxed?
After a normal resignation, it is taxed with your other income at your marginal rate. If you are made genuinely redundant or retire, unused leave is taxed at no more than 32%, including the Medicare levy.
